Pandemic has delayed social skills of young children, says education experts

Isn’t it wild how the pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives, even the way our kids interact with each other? I stumbled upon a discussion recently about how young children are struggling with their social skills, and it hit home. I have a niece who just turned five, and watching her navigate playdates has been both heartwarming and a little concerning.

So, picture this: before the pandemic, kids were out and about, learning the ropes of social interaction—sharing toys, playing tag, and just being kids. But then, bam! Lockdowns and social distancing turned playdates into virtual hangouts, and that natural, carefree way of connecting took a hit. My niece was one of those kids who went from frequent trips to the park to playing online games with her friends. I remember the first time we finally got together for a family gathering after months apart. It was both a joyous reunion and a bit awkward. She was shy, hesitant to approach her cousins, even though they used to be inseparable.

Education experts have been sounding the alarm about this very issue. They’re noticing that many young children are showing signs of delayed social development. It makes sense when you think about it—if you’re not practicing those skills regularly, they can become rusty. Kids need to interact, to feel the ebb and flow of conversations, and to learn how to handle conflicts with peers. A friend of mine, who’s a kindergarten teacher, mentioned that some of her students struggle with simple things like taking turns or reading social cues. “It’s like they missed out on a crash course in friendship,” she said, and I couldn’t agree more.

There’s something poignant about how a child’s world shrunk during the pandemic. For them, the small joys of running around with friends, sharing snacks, or even just chatting about their favorite cartoons suddenly became rare treasures. Instead of giggles in the backyard, we had Zoom calls with lagging connections, where kids would often end up more interested in their pets than their friends. It was a strange sight, watching these little ones trying to connect through screens, and it made me realize just how much we all crave that face-to-face interaction.

The good news is, as we gradually return to a semblance of normalcy, parents and educators are stepping up. Playgroups and outdoor activities are being organized to help kids re-acclimate to social settings. I remember the excitement in my niece’s eyes when I told her we were going to a park playdate. It was like I’d just offered her a golden ticket! Watching her play with other kids again was so fulfilling. You could see the gears turning as she navigated sharing toys and figuring out how to join in games. It was a reminder that while they may have missed out on some crucial social skills, there’s still so much potential to grow and learn.

Experts are also suggesting that we, as adults, need to model positive social interactions for our kids. When they see us engaging with others—whether it’s chatting with neighbors or being polite in stores—they pick up on those cues. It’s all about creating an environment where they feel safe to explore relationships and express themselves.

It’s been a challenging couple of years, no doubt, but I have faith that these kids will bounce back. They’re resilient, and with a little guidance and support, they’ll find their way back to the joy of socializing. As we slowly navigate this new world, let’s not forget to nurture their social skills and remind them that the playground of life is still waiting to be explored.
