For the third time in the history of medicine, a patient with HIV is considered cured. The patient is a 53-year-old German male. According to the study published in the scientific journal Nature, he underwent a bone marrow transplant to treat his leukemia .

There are people who naturally have a mutation in their CCR5 receptors. This mutation is very rare and causes these people to have less or no chance of being infected with some strains of the HIV virus.
In the three cases in which the patients were declared cured, the HIV-1 positive patient underwent a bone marrow transplant with stem cells from patients with the naturally occurring mutation.
It is like replacing the entire immune system of the patient undergoing the transplant with one resistant to the HIV virus.
These cases are still occasional, due to the rarity of occurrence of this mutation, in addition to finding individuals with this mutation in CCR5. The use of stem cells in the treatment of leukemia is also a risk factor.
