HIV infection occurs through contact with blood, semen, vaginal secretions, in addition to other forms of transmission and is considered a lifelong viral infection.
HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, attacks the infected person’s immune system , opening the possibility for other opportunistic diseases to take advantage of this.
In Germany, a patient was declared cured of HIV and in 2018 left the treatment that keeps the virus at low levels and, after a ten-year follow-up, there is no evidence that the virus can be reactivated, thus remaining HIV-free since then.
But how did it happen?
The 53-year-old man underwent a bone marrow transplant operation to treat leukemia. Bone marrow transplantation is performed by exchanging immune system cells from healthy people. These donors did not have HIV.
Before him, some other cases were reported in which bone marrow transplantation resulted in cure of HIV-1 infection in other parts of the world.
The bone marrow transplantation procedure is considered high risk and has been used for the treatment of leukemia with great success for many years. Including HIV-1 non-reactive cells is another novelty that has been working out little by little.
It is like replacing the entire immune system of the patient undergoing the transplant with one resistant to the HIV virus.
These cases are still occasional, due to the high risk and the various specificities required of both the donor and the recipient for the treatment to give the expected result.
The use of stem cells in the treatment of leukemia is also a risk factor. This treatment is still being improved and is not yet an option available to all HIV-1 carriers.
